Up until the very last minute FKA twigs was favourite to win this year’s Barclaycard Mercury Prize.
But, as you’ll know by now, she was pipped to the post by Scottish hip-hop trio Young Fathers.
Any disappointment shouldn’t last long since this mixed-race 26 year-old from Gloucester (formerly known as Tahliah Barnett) is a multi-talented performer already on a steep career curve.
She first came to attention as a featured dancer in Kylie Minogue, Ed Sheeran and Jessie J videos before gracing the covers of tastemaking style and music mags like i-D and The Fader.
In 2012 FKA twigs recorded an EP for Bandcamp, which was hailed as a prime example of ‘ethereal twisted R&B’ UK stylee, before releasing her debut Young Turks album LP1 this time last year.
Now Google has licensed an eerie mash-up of two titles from that collection, Video Girl and Glass & Patron, to soundtrack an eye-catching commercial for its groundbreaking new OHMD (optical head-mounted display) unit.
And not only does FKA twigs star in the film but she directed it too.
So move over Madonna and tell Lady Gaga the news. There’s another girl on the block threatening to stretch the envelope – only this time she’s British.
