Sony Bravia TV has been synonymous with eye-catching ads ever since 2005 when thousands of brightly coloured tennis balls bouncing down a street in San Francisco launched the career of Swedish folk singer Jose Gonzalez.
Eleven years later and its latest explosive More Brilliance, More Beauty 4K HDR screen campaign should land the UK’s Tom Odell an international hit with a cover of Cyndi Lauper’s 1986 single True Colours.
The sync was secured by Sony Music Germany, who, says Head Of Music Licensing Jan Kubran, received a highly detailed music brief from DDB Berlin which “focused on dramaturgy and tonality” and suggested three possible musical directions, including a re-record.
“We had demoed the song with Tom for a previous Bravia campaign,” Kubran continues.
“He was touring in Australia when this was finally approved but was happy to find a free slot in his diary to record a new version and make last minute adjustments as soon as returning to London.”
The ad will be broadcast in more than 30 European countries while Odell’s single, released on September 30 on all global digital sales platforms (click here), will benefit from the cross-promotional synergies at the heart of the home entertainment giant’s One Sony strategy.
