Sony Music and BBC Sport have tapped into Euro 2016 soccermania by placing young soul singer Izzy Bizu firmly in the centre circle.
The broadcaster’s live coverage of the four week tournament, which kicked off on Saturday night (June 11), will be marked by Bizu’s update of La Foule, a classic 1957 French chanson by the legendary Edith Piaf.
After approaching the Match Of The Day team, Sony Sync Manager Tom Clough learned that BBC Football Creative Lead Chris Grubb was considering iconic Piaf tracks as title music for the Euro campaign.
“I suggested a re-record by a current artist like Izzy would be more applicable to today’s audience,” Clough says.
The 22 year-old French speaker – who narrowly missed out on last year’s Brits Critics Choice award but was longlisted for the BBC Sound of…2016 – demoed a new version of La Foule before mastering it with the BBC’s Concert Orchestra at London’s Angel Studios.
A behind-the-scenes film focusing on Bizu’s performance is now available on BBC iPlayer .
"Breaking a new artist into the market is always a difficult task,“ Clough concludes. ”So being part of one of the most viewed programmes this year is a great achievement."
