While they don’t exactly tower over the UK’s urban landscape it’s impossible to imagine the Great British High Street without McDonald’s and its trademark golden arches.
Since first opening its doors in Woolwich on October 1 1974, the world’s favourite fast food restaurant now boasts more than a thousand outlets on this side of the pond.
To celebrate its impending 40th Anniversary McDonald’s has launched a multi-spot TV campaign designed to reinforce the message that a Big Mac can transform modern life’s little rituals into moments to savour forever.
Shot by leading Finnish director Pete Riski, each of these half dozen mini-movies is soundtracked by a mid-70s charting single by artists – such as Melanie, Minnie Riperton and Peters & Lee – who might otherwise be considered a little past their sell-by dates.
Tastiest of them all must be Thin Lizzy’s signature smash The Boys Are Back In Town. Gracing a winsome clip entitled Just Passed Your Test Drive-Thru, this is the 1976 Number 3 hit which, with the briefest of nods to an emergent Bruce Springsteen, lifted the Dublin rockers out of obscurity and turned their late lead singer Phil Lynott into a legend in his own lunchtime.
