History has a way of repeating itself.

Ever since The Band made their auspicious debut with The Weight in 1968, successive generations of young maverick musicians have sought to distance themselves from the mainstream by re-exploring pop’s more rural backwaters.

Such swampy and unashamedly eclectic roots rock has been much loved by the UK’s critical establishment too.

So few would have been surprised when Alt-J followed in the footsteps of 1998 winners Gomez to scoop the 2012 Mercury Prize with a debut album filled with warped Americana married to British beats.

Now the erstwhile Leeds University alumni are back with a chart-topping second CD This Is All Yours and an equally strong sync supporting brewing giant Diageo’s new scotch whisky brand Haig Club.

Directed by former Mr Madonna Guy Ritchie, this film stars the increasingly ubiquitous David Beckham as one of a group of fashionably hirsute late thirtysomethings gathering for a high class lads and lassies weekend in the Highlands.

The temptation to underpin it with a more obviously Scottish soundtrack must have been immense.

But while it may lack a certain McCauthenticity, Alt-J’s alt-bluesy Left Hand Free certainly invokes the smooth and smoky taste of a great toasting tipple.

Cheers!
