With exactly eight weeks to go before the big day the race is on for the TV ad to define Christmas 2014.
Even as media interest grows around the latest John Lewis film, rival department store chain Debenhams has ramped up its seasonal TV offer with a multi-million pound Found It spot built round Paul McCartney’s 1984 Yuletide hit We All Stand Together.
It was scheduled to break on Saturday November 8 during ITV’s X Factor and will run until the end of the holiday season.
Cord Worldwide supervisors Irene Salmanca and Alison Butters began working with creatives at agency JWT on the project in April.
Although a wide range of tracks were considered, it was director David Edwards who first suggested the theme song to the animated movie Rupert Bear and The Frog Chorus.
The sync marks the third time adbreakanthems has registered a personal appearance by the former Beatles’ bassplayer among the commercials – the others came in 2013 with clips for Ralph Lauren and Linda McCartney Foods respectively.
Maybe this package won’t return the track to the top of the charts but the heady mix of choir, orchestra and good old-fashioned Macca melody is certainly festive enough to strike the right kind of chord with families too young to remember it.
