The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), supported by the majors Sony Music, Universal and Warner, are understood to be the prime movers behind the campaign.
The advertising is likely to focus on the IFPI’s recent claim that the music industry is on the path to recovery, fueled by legal music services.
Agencies are also likely to be asked to create advertising to counter the threat of illegal downloading.
The IFPI’s move follows the launch of the Music Matters initiative in 2010, which was designed to educated people about copyright and featured a series of animated films featuring artists such as Elbow and Nick Cave.
