No, we must admit we hadn’t heard of Metcalfe’s Topcorn before we saw this spot – but that’s all changed now!
Owned by the same Julian Metcalfe who brought good taste at a good price to London lunch counters via his Pret A Manger and Itsu chains, Topcorn reputedly beat Butterkist to become Britain’s best-known brand of bagged popcorn last year.
And with a mind bomb like this B&W beauty to boost its profile, it should easily maintain its position as a real market leader.
Creative agency Quiet Storm is to be applauded for recruiting Funki Porcini, better known as multi-media maestro James Braddell, to mark out the Topcorn territory.
By syncing a snatch of one of the typically downtempo jazz tracks from his 2013 Ninja Tune album Le Banquet Cassio to a cleverly-edited clip from surrealist Luis Bunuel’s 1965 art house classic Simon Of The Desert, Braddell has done more than merely carve out one of the coolest ads we’ve seen in long time.
He has sent us chasing after what more of his work we can find on the internet. And there’s quite a selection too. So why don’t you Google him with us – and pass the popcorn!
