Are we the only ones who think Smooth Sailing sounds like it was born from an unholy alliance between Family’s Burlesque and Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir?
Then again, should we be surprised? Nearly 30 years since he first walked into a recording studio, Queens Of The Stone Age’s riffmeister Josh Homme has built a real reputation from pick’n’mixing classic pop and prog influences and marrying them to post punk and heavy metal downbeats.
This track is lifted from the band’s most recent album Like Clockwork, which entered the UK charts at Number Two last Autumn on Matador/Beggars.
As the soundbed to Citroen DS3’s highly fashion-conscious Light Reveals You spot, Smooth… broke only days before QOTSA were named last-minute headliners at this weekend’s Reading and Leeds Festivals.
Of course, Homme is no stranger to the adbreaks in the US but can chalk this one up as his second high-profile European sync in little more than three months.
Back in April, his spin-off project Eagles of Death Metal scored heavily in a mammoth pre-World Cup footiefest campaign for Nike in which some of the greatest soccer players on the planet tried to get one past the Incredible Hulk.
So who knows where the man’ll rock up next?
