HSBC Advance’s new Housewarming campaign underlines the High Street bank’s belief that everybody needs support systems to progress through life by focusing on a young family taking their first step onto the property ladder.
It would be tempting to add that the commercial’s jaunty, ukulele driven soundtrack Slo Mo Tiger Glo also marks Suffolk-born singer songwriter Fiona Bevan’s first step on the stairway to the stars.
But it wouldn’t be quite true since the thirtysomething multi-instrumentalist – who has been variously compared to Erykah Badu, Joanna Newsom, Leslie Feist and Kate Bush – is already credited with million-plus selling titles like One Direction’s chart-topping single Little Things (co-written with Ed Sheeran in his pre-fame folk club days) and Voodoo Doll by 5 Seconds Of Summer.
It was Irene Salamanca, senior music producer at Cord Worldwide, who first heard solo Bevan’s album Talk To Strangers, originally released in March 2014 on Proper Distribution’s Navigator label.
“We were looking for something for HSBC which was heart-warming without being obvious, nostalgic or sweet,” she says.
“We had carried out a few searches focusing on lyric content before we realised that what stood out in the shortlisted tracks were melody and instrumentation. Slo Mo Tiger Glo’s simplicity and the beautiful vocal on the intro clicked immediately.”
But, Salamanca continues, the track very nearly missed the scheduled broadcast date of March 30.
“We hit upon it at the last minute and so had just one day to put the final package together. The wonderful teams at Proper Music and Imagem managed to get everything cleared and ready to air in a matter of hours.”
HSBC has licensed Slo Mo Tiger Glo for 12 months while Proper/Navigator rush released the track as a single last week.
