Nescafe Original has turned to a 30 year old rock anthem to launch an amusing new Swooshy Man TV campaign aimed at younger coffee drinkers.
Here I Go Again was a US chart topper and a UK Top 10 hit in 1987 for Whitesnake, the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) era band led by former Deep Purple front man David Coverdale.
Shot in characteristically comic slow motion by Swedish directors Traktor, the film shows a long-haired young man feeling like a legend in his own lifetime as he walks to work.
Dave Monk, ECD at ad agency Publicis London praises the commercial for its “bombastic daftness”.
But, says Chris Phelps, Producer at music supervisor Finger Music, it was important that the music track should support rather than simply send up the Swooshy Man hero.
“We considered a lot of different styles including some outlandish hip hop versions which worked well because they were unexpected,” he adds.
“But we banked Here I Go Again nice and early because it felt like an audio representation of what’s going on in the character’s head and helped soundtrack his moves and confidence. That’s what classic rock is all about.”
