Estee Lauder’s decision to hire Scandinavian teen star Zara Larsson to be the face of a new range of Clinique lipsticks may have raised eyebrows on Madison Avenue.
But those Nordic pop watchers who remember her as the 10 year old winner of Sweden’s Got Talent in 2008 were not overly surprised.
Snapped up by Stockholm’s TEN Music Group – and subsequently signed to Sony in the US – Larsson already had a brace of domestic platinum pop smashes to her name before Epic’s Alla Benyatov pitched her to the market-leading cosmetics brand and its ad agency Wieden & Kennedy early in 2015.
A year later the results can be seen in Clinique’s groundbreaking interactive campaign Play With Pop which helped propel the 18 year old’s infectious Lush Life single into the UK Top 10 - and stay there for the last eight weeks.
The online video, shot by LA promo director Hiro Murai, is designed to show how women can express different facets of their personalities by changing the colour of their lipstick.
It allows viewers to toggle seamlessly between four separate mixes of the single – each performed by a Zara Larsson sporting radically different images to suit the Acoustic, Dancehall, Country and Pop styles on offer.
