While other supermarket chains relied on more traditional Yuletide tunes to draw the Christmas crowds, Tesco turned to an orchestrated version of The Pogues’ bittersweet Fairytale Of New York, which, since it was first released in 1987, with the late Kirsty MacColl guesting on vocals, has been regularly hailed as one of the best Christmas songs ever.
